Marfa Public Radio Seeks Over $450k

KRTS operators Matinee Media have requested $476,242 in federal funding to provide the new public radio station to the Marfa area. This money would go toward the total operating cost of $634,990. (Is that anually? - guess it costs a bit more than pirate radio!) link

"Marfa Public Radio (KRTS-FM) seeks federal funding assistance in constructing the basic transmission line (tower, antenna, etc.) for a new stattion to provide first service to Far West Texas, as well as the only radio service for a substantial portion of the population."

I don't know about you, but I'm really looking forward to the day our station is up and running. Will we have actual DJs and the like? Can I be one? I'll do late nite stints, whatever it takes!

I'm looking forward to it also. I'm not the person to ask as to the particulars, but all I keep picturing in my head is a setup like in Northern Exposure where the DJ (Chris) sat there in a small space on main street behind the glass! That would be a hoot.

Orginally you all talked about using an existing tower for marfa radio transmission. Don't get me wrong I want public radio but I do not want another tall tower in or near the Davis Mts. BB region. Many of us are here because of the pristine nature of the place. No tower is attractive and strobe lights are offensive. Get it right and do as you originally stated. Use an existing tower.

p.s. rather than competing with existing community radio in terlingua, marathon and marfa why not tap those resources and develope the existing talent and experience. that would make for real community radio.
