MISD Free Public Give Away

Did you read the public notice? Marfa Independant School District will be holding a free give away of miscellaneous surplus items on Thursday, September 22. It will be held at the Blackwell School, on Waco between Kelly and Abbot, starting at 9 in the morning. The piles of rusting furniture strewn about the yard are surely part of the give away.
And maybe there's more... This will be a great improvement to this part of town to have the Blackwell School cleaned up a bit. Does anyone know if there are plans for the school?

I really appreciate your blog. I'm learning alot about Marfa and the Big Bend area. I'm contemplating a future relocation to the area, and your blog is very helpful. thanks!

For years folks have talked about making the Blackwell School a sort of combo youth-center/park but MISD always seemed content to just let it sit there. Hope the give-away is an indication of something starting to happen. It's a nice old building with lots of history. I hope the district does right by the place, and doesn't decide to just sell it to the highest bidder.

I couldn't agree more. I understand that the Blackwell School was the school for hispanics during segregation. (Is that correct?) Of course it holds a special importance to the community, and should be restored. The lot is definitely big enough to develop as some kind of community center. Let's hope this clean-up is a sign.

Blackwell school

Dang. I thought Blackwell school was a permanent installation, depicting a deteriorating school building from a former time; left to naturally desintegrate.
Rooms filled with faded posters, flags, and emblems. Everything is broken, boarded-up, and neglected. Bookcases and desks with [ Spanish ] notebooks, and memorabilia scattered throughout the disordered classrooms tell a story about another place and time.
oh. It's been Done??
Seriously - it's a beautiful old building i hope it finds a good use and respects, reminds us of it's past.

Yes, Marfa schools were segregated right up until, hmmm, I can't remember the date but I want to say the early 1960s - anybody know more accurately? Blackwell School was the southside Hispanic school, and Marfa Elementary was the northside white school. (I think the two always came together at the one Marfa High School, but that too should be double-checked.) Ask any Marfa native of a certain age and they'll tell you all about the place. Pancho Borunda was a bunch of Blackwell memorabilia up in his restaurant, or he did, last time I was there.

It was a big deal when Blackwell closed and all the kids moved in together at Marfa Elementary. I've heard stories about how the kids carried their own desks from Blackwell all the way up the hill to their new school. I've heard that story told as both a memory of the grand moving day but also as a telling anecdote about the white school administrators' reluctance to integrate. Lots of history there.
