Alan Vannoy Reception Tonight

alan vanoy printNew work by printmaker and book artist Alan Vannoy will be shown at HWY 90 Gallery in December, launched by a reception at the gallery tonight, December 1.

At his studio in Alpine, Texas, Vannoy uses a flatbed press to create colorful, imaginative prints and hand-made books that incorporate images from an assortment of common objects. “I have a large collection of do-it-yourself encyclopedias and vintage catalogs, dingbats and letterpress catalogs, stickers and unique magazines,” said Vannoy. “I also collect fried pie wrappers and potato chip bags and hot dog wrappers and small toys and fake tattoos and firecracker labels, interesting receipts and food labels.”

Sometimes humorous, light and whimsical, sometimes darkly macabre, Vannoy’s work combines iconic images from everyday life in unusual, evocative ways. “Some of my work is about the simpler things in life: good times, food, and family. Sometimes my work explores more complex ideas: health, sexuality, death, insanity.”

The reception tonight will be from 6 to 8 p.m. The exhibit will run through January 1.

Also on display will be work by Marfa artists Gretchen Lee Coles, Martha Hughes, Keith Lymon, and Leslie Wilkes, as well as work by John Adelman, Jenny Bloomfield, Lance Letscher, Mel Lyons, Matthew Riva, Tad Wiley, and Joan Winter.
