I Didn't Know These Things
I didn't know the late Phillip Johnson commissioned a site-specific sculpture by Judd for his New Canaan estate until I read this article. And I didn't know that this Judd, this Judd, and this Judd were gifted to MoMA from Johnson. And, I have no idea what a "gift by exchange" is, but Johnson did that with this Judd.
Did you know the piece at Johnson's estate was the first ever exterior concrete piece produced by Judd? I didn't. For that nugget, I dug up a forbidden article at philipjohnsonglasshouse.org which you may find here. Here's a quote:
"A full inventory of all on-site objects and artwork on the Philip Johnson Glass House campus has been completed and includes works by John Chamberlain, Lynn Davis, Donald Judd, Brice Marden, Robert Morris, Elie Nadelman, Bruce Nauman, Andrew Lord, Michael Heizer, Robert Rauschenberg, David Salle, Julian Schnabel, George Segal, Cindy Sherman, and Andy Warhol. Of special interest, situated along the driveway to the Glass House and Brick House is the first exterior work in concrete by Donald Judd (1928-1994). Completed in 1971 it is one of a very few site-specific outdoor installations by Judd in the world. "
