I Didn't Know These Things
I didn't know the late Phillip Johnson commissioned a site-specific sculpture by Judd for his New Canaan estate until I read this article. And I didn't know that this Judd, this Judd, and this Judd were gifted to MoMA from Johnson. And, I have no idea what a "gift by exchange" is, but Johnson did that with this Judd.
Did you know the piece at Johnson's estate was the first ever exterior concrete piece produced by Judd? I didn't. For that nugget, I dug up a forbidden article at philipjohnsonglasshouse.org which you may find here. Here's a quote:
"A full inventory of all on-site objects and artwork on the Philip Johnson Glass House campus has been completed and includes works by John Chamberlain, Lynn Davis, Donald Judd, Brice Marden, Robert Morris, Elie Nadelman, Bruce Nauman, Andrew Lord, Michael Heizer, Robert Rauschenberg, David Salle, Julian Schnabel, George Segal, Cindy Sherman, and Andy Warhol. Of special interest, situated along the driveway to the Glass House and Brick House is the first exterior work in concrete by Donald Judd (1928-1994). Completed in 1971 it is one of a very few site-specific outdoor installations by Judd in the world. "

Black On Blonde @ The Lot
Black on Blonde will play at The Lot tomorrow night (Saturday, June 16th) with special opening guests The Corpses. The Lot is hosting a summer music series located at 719 S. Highland Ave.
"The Lot is an outdoor performance venue located in Marfa, TX. This is our second year in operation, and we are gearing up for an exciting summer series. The Lot has already seen bands from Montreal, Austin and New York, as well as numerous local groups grace its stage. It is also a perfect place for plays and performance art in an outdoor setting. The Lot is locally owned and operated by the Scott family, and they are committed to projects that give back to the community. Hope to see you @ The Lot soon!!!"

Chinati.org Receives Major Upgrade
Have you been to the Chinati Foundation website lately? If not, it's definitely time for another visit. Chinati.org recently received a major update which includes a new look and tons of great content that can absorb more than a few hours of your day. Kudos to the foundation for getting this done. Each of artists in the foundation's permanent collection (Judd, Flavin, Chamberlain, Horn, Wesley...) is featured with a brief write-up and viewable images. Other details include mission statement, tours, accomodations, membership and artist-in-residence program. The site was expertly designed and constructed by local Marfan Buck Johnston of bbgun Interactive. Great job Buck!
If you haven't read about this year's Open House program, there's a page devoted to it here. By the way, this year's special exhibition will be work by David Rabinowitch and a musical performance by Sonic Youth! (Apparently I can't write Sonic Youth without one of these "!".)

David Packer, Trainspotting
"Several years ago on a trip to Marfa Texas, Packer was impressed by the enormous freight trains that seem to be omnipresent in that landscape. At any time, day or night, one would be aware of these extremely long trains whose contents are completely unknown to outsiders. Packer could not help but draw linear conclusions to American corporate culture, with its ethos of secrecy and greed. The presence of these trains in such a pristine landscape also created a connection between corporate activity and the abuse of the environment..."

Coen brothers spin a murderous Texas tale
"The American siblings’ latest film, “No Country for Old Men,” is a tale of murder that has impressed audiences and critics at Cannes Film Festival. At its center is an aging sheriff (Tommy Lee Jones) trying to catch a killer and make sense of a world in which violence seems to have no end..." “Like the novel, like the story, with the landscape you wonder: Is it really incredibly bleak or is it beautiful? It’s kind of both.”
